"The Blue Angel"
The stone was found on a wave swept beach by (Captain) James Cook in approx. 1990. She has never been weighed but my guess puts her around 275 pounds.
Greg Byrne milled the wood from a storm damaged first growth redwood in the Ventana Campground. He is also responsible for the design. His dad, Ralph drilled the wood from the bottom slanting side to below the mounted stone inserting a strong metal rod, strengthening the design.
Phil Rodgers, an excellent woodcarver and sculptor, finished the base with a hand rubbed finish including thousands of chisel marks on four surfaces and put his artist's sign underneath the stone.
The stone has been hand rubbed a bit by the Captain years ago but remains a natural from the ocean. She is mounted on a solid steel shaft 1 and 1/2 inches thick which is inserted almost 6 inches into the Jade and a similar amount into the redwood. The angel spins with a light touch.
